Some Mixed Messages?

As promised, here’s more of your feedback from the 2012 blog survey (with thanks again to everyone who took part)

I suppose that the thing that concerns me most about the 2012 blog survey, in spite of the rise in the percentage of respondents who felt the blog was “Excellent”, was the reduction in those who felt the blog was “Always impartial and balanced”. Between 2011 and 2012, this had slipped three per cent. I accept that this is marginal but it’s still in the wrong direction. I do actually strive for balance. And I am not sure that I’ve changed my writing style or approach...

A new question for 2012 was, “How often are posts of interest to you?” Just over two thirds of respondents said that posts were of interest to them most of the time. It depends upon how you define “most of the time”. Legally, “most” means at least 51 per cent. So, in this case, about 70 per cent of readers feel that posts are of interest to them at least 51 per cent of the time. I somehow hope in my case “most” means significantly more than 51 per cent!

That said, more respondents felt that the blog has managed to establish itself as a strong online community. The numbers who weren’t sure remains high, though.

What was good news for this blog, overall, was the steadily increasing numbers who believe it is their favourite. The number of respondents who felt this has risen from 30 per cent in 2009 to just shy of 50 per cent in 2012. And that’s something we’re rather proud of.

I note what you say but personally I don't see that the blog posts always need to be impartial and balanced. Correspondents express their opinions and you should be free to express yours!

Balanced or unbalanced etc: my views on the weight put on fluctuations of opinion is that one should consider the number of respondents. The greater the number the more reliance can be put on percentages, as the views expressed are more likely to be in line with the reality.

To few respondents and even one changing position can cause substantial movements.

You can still be impartial and still keep the blog balanced.

Every post will never balanced, but as long as its truthful that what matters.

but of course it does help have the other side of the coin, even if that impossible

I like a balanced post, but see nothing wrong with Busing expressing a clearly identified opinion. And, as he indicated, occasional posts are intended to provoke comment.

By the way, my thought, when I answered that posts are of interest most of the time was that about 95% plus posts are of interest to me.
