If you want another linguistic controversy, is it Trent Barton 'is (singular) taking over the world' (as you say) or should it be 'are (plural) an independent bus operator in the East Midlands' (as they say)? Language is a flexible and constantly-changing thing and we should not be too pendantic about it.
Trent Barton is a single corporate entity, therefore is singular. Certainly, language evolves, but there have to be some rules to ensure that communication makes sense!
'Trent Barton are' makes just as much sense as 'Trent Barton is' - there is no ambiguity. Plurals are often used with companies, sporting teams etc.
Some people used to get very upset about 'Hopefully it won't rain tomorrow', but hopefully they have got over it by now. Nothing stays the same.

It 'makes sense' purely because people are accustomed to hearing it but that doesn't make it correct.
