1 Buses Magazine
2 Routemaster RM
7 GMPTE (Manchester)
8 True (VOSA can)
14 Last Bus Ltd (I think)
15 Either Bristol Omnibus or Eastern National (possibly both)
19 Midland Red
20 1998 Arriva, depends First, at the beginning Stagecoach

5 - (a) Endless became Drawlane, morphing into British Bus and eventually Cowie and Arriva. (b) Frontsource was Alder Valley South, I think. (c) Quayshelfco 175 was, IIRC, Badger Vectis. (e) Gurna - not sure, wasn't this the holding company for Eastern National at privatisation?

4. Stephen Byers, 11. Keith Ludeman, 12. Coachmart, 14. aircoach, 16. Oxford Bus Company

Midland 'Red' said...

Two answers to the largest NBC operator, London County and Midland 'Red'.

As someone who used to work for Midland 'Red', we prided ourselves at being the biggest of them all. After the WMPTE took our best routes, it was a close thing, mind.

I notivce you give choices (a) to (e). You could have added (f) Ribble as they were bigger than some of your choices.... but not bigger than Midland 'Red'!

5c yes Quayshelfco was Badger Vectis (who also proposed the unused trading name Poole Pandas)

5e yes Gurna was Eastern National

Is the largest NBC company question based on number of vehicles, turnover, geographical area...?!

Pedant's corner again:

"1980s splits" should have an apostrophe!

; )

Did enjoy this quiz and managed just 7/20 though I did get three right for q5. Does that give me 9/20?

Anon @ 1039

You mean FALSE (because VOSA can stop vehicles)

"True or false. Only vehicles with “blues and twos” (blue flashing lights & sirens) are able to stop buses & coaches on the highway."
LOL, must be false, because bad parkers can do that. Noe if you'd written "are permitted". ;)

Could 5 (f) be the old Lancashire United?
12 was the The Coaching Journal.

Irish legislation is still the Transport Act *1932*

Question 17 average number pax = 32

Question 9 Republic of Ireland: Road Traffic Acts 1932, 1961

16 - Oxford Bus Co's Airline
20 - Arriva: late 1997; First's corporate interior dates from 1997, the exterior from 1998; Stagecoach has always had a corporate livery from the start in 1980, although it was first applied elsewhere with the acquisition of Hampshire Bus, Utd Counties and Cumberland in 1987. The name was Brian Souter's brother David's idea.

Trying the few that haven't yet been answered, or to suggest different answers, I would suggest the following:-

3. b) - I can't believe a van is the winner, thinking about how often they have to stop!

5 (b) Frontsource was a selection of former NBC engineering subsidiaries, but also included East Midland.

5 (f) I understood Lanaten also owned Northern Counties, as well as Lancashire United in the early 1970s.

6. I'll try Control Systems - just a guess.

15. I think Bristol OC, though Eastern National also had blue driver trainers.

18. Passenger Vehicle Operators Association (as well as Bus and Coach Council already given)

Incidentally ';)', I'm not sure why "1980s splits" needs an apostrophe? As far as I can see, it's neither possessive nor an abbreviation - the splits were not all in 1980!

2. Leyland Atlantean? The last one has, I think, just been withdrawn in Blackpool.

Of course!! Doh :-(

Thanks to 'Bus and Coach Preservation', the answer to 15 is definitely Eastern National.

Not so sure about Bristol OC now!

A couple of last minute corrections
5b - Frontsource had nothing to do with East Midland which was an MBO from NBC. E.Midland used the fleetname "Frontrunner" for operations outside their traditional heartland

10 The ESOP was Provincial t/a "People's Provincial" - Gosport & Fareham was the original Prvincial company but had been merged into the above Provincial Bus Co Ltd. in 1983, along with H&D's Fareham based operations.

20 The Stagecoach livery wasn't applied to the ex NBC companies initially, IIRC the first repaints etc started circa June 1988.

Ah yes, you're right - I was confusing Frontsource and Frontrunner! Frontsource did also own Alder Valley South. There's more about their demise here:-
