Stagecoach or Go Ahead: You Chose

(The poll associated wit this post has closed. Results soon)

Yesterday’s post alluded to an imminent announcement as to who might be the beneficiary in the Plymouth Citybus sale. It’s now heavily rumoured to be a two-horse race... between… Stagecoach and Go Ahead.

It no longer seems to be the case that Plymothians are trying to stop a sale but preparing themselves for the likely eventuality.

Both Stagecoach & Go Ahead bring with them a reputation for quality. Both have sufficient flair to develop strategies that will lead to ridership growth. Both will be fearless in the face of First Devon & Cornwall (although First’s presence on the streets yesterday will affect the Citybus selling price).

Only one manages matters locally. But only one has a strong, nationally-known brand.

Which do readers see as offering the best deal for Plymothians—in terms of growth, innovation & flair, punctuality, reliability, standards, presentation, etc? Or is Citybus doing all these anyway?

And which, in your views, would be most of a threat to First?

Meanwhile, reports from Plymouth indicate that Day-1-in-Earnest was a little short of eventful, while senior First staff gave out freebies including pasties to the tune of a hired pop band. Some congestion, possibly some short term transfer of loyalties thanks to First’s promotional fares, but nothing out of the ordinary—yet...

Of the two my heart says Goahead as it will keep a strong local identity rather than just become another anonymous Stagecoach fleet.

That said being part of SC will bring benefits of through ticketing etc, esp as SC and W Greyhound have joint day ticket availabilty.

Well it shouldn't be terrible either way, I would say. Certainly I think the best two have made the shortlist.

However, I would probably lean towards Stagecoach. Plymouth Citybus currently provides a large and varied network across the city, and Stagecoach seems to me more willing to develop and grow such networks holistically, compared to Go-Ahead's "invest in core routes and hang the rest" approach.

Either Stagecoach or Go Ahead would be fine - it's only really First that we all know would manage to c*ck it up.

Stagecoach, next stop Cornwall!

It may just be me, but Go Ahead seem to truly excel only in areas where there is clear-cut profitability ... places you'd really have to be a moron to fail (eg Brighton and Hove)...that's not to denigrate Roger French, who's really made the most of a winning hand...

Plymouth's more of a curate's egg, and I agree with anonymous 1336 that Stagecoach usually tackle this sort of scenario better...

STAGECOACH V FIRST D & C.. I AM SURE WOULD BE EXCELLENT NEWS FOR PLYMOUTH BUS TRAVELLERS, AND I AM SURE WOULD LEAD TO EVEN MORE COMPETING ON ROUTES IN THE AREA.
NEXT STOP CORNWALL ??? I DOUBT IT, I RECKON YOU WILL BE LEFT WITH THE GREYHOUND, STAGECoACHWOULDN'T BE INTERSTED AND I AM SURE FIRST WILL LOOK TO FURTHER CUT BACKS HERE TO PART FUND THEIR EXPANSION IN PROFITABLE PLYMOUTH ROUTES AND TO SUBSIDISE THEIR WAR WITH STAGECOACH IN PLYMOUTH AND OTHER PARTS OF DEVON!!
