Crumbs. Three weeks ago we predicted that Optare would use Euro Bus Expo 2008 to launch a new double deck and a new Solo. So far as we know, this was the first you might’ve heard of such developments. Anyway, it’s apparently absolutely true. At the NEC next week, there’ll be an as yet unnamed integral decker and a revised Solo.
When last Optare launched a decker (in 1992), it turned double deck design on its head. If you’re expecting an even more radical design from Optare this time, you won’t be disappointed. The offering will be a lot ‘cleaner’ than current Optare products, will make a statement, with a slightly raked, bold front and an ultra-modern light cluster. Not everyone will like its possible black-and-glass frontal appearance, though.
The double deck promises to be available in 2009 with either a conventional Euro V or hybrid driveline at lengths of 10.8 or 11.5m, seating around 90, though the NEC product is expected to be more of a mock-up. The integral design is thought to save five per cent in fuel and will boast a roof and upper deck panels comprised of composites.
The revised Solo takes its cue from the flagship double deck, giving Solo a cutting, thrusting air, while retaining some well-known Solo design features, including the front wheel arch flair. It’s likely to be present to gauge operator reaction. And if you think that the new Solo will incorporate the tadpole-like appearance found on the Versa, think again.
