He’d promised it as part of his election manifesto and now new London mayor Boris Johnson’s lost little time in doing what he said he’d do: a competition to design a new bus for London: a new London Routemaster, of sorts. See both posts on the RMXL.
It can be any colour so long as it’s red and should include an open platform, disabled access and green technology. Simple, really. And the mayor’s appealing to all sorts in the community to come forward with designs, offering £25,000 for the winner.
But will mainstream manufacturers build such a bus? Will London be able to afford to crew them? And will the dreaded risk assessment put paid to a once loved design? We've considered these aspects before in what have been rather popular posts. Try some:

Does anyone, apart from Boris, really expect this will happen?
Yes, London is unique, but so are Paris, New York, Rome all other large cities - they manage very well with saloons including artics and in some case modern deckers.
I'll believe it when I see it - there may be one or two built but really, I repeat, does anyone in the industry (operating or manufacturing)or enthusiasts expect that we shall see a fleet of modern open-platform "icons"?
