A Unique Event

Saturday marked the last day of the last full Leyland National network anywhere in the world. If you missed the 940-word full tribute and wish to indulge, click to see Omnibuses’ memorial bloglet pretty much as it appeared on this page on Sunday, orange and all, with all pictures care of Omnibuses' redesignated Midland (Northern) Corespondent and words substantially from him as well. If you want unusual Chase shots, try our bloglet.

Omnibuses’ Midlands (Northern) Correspondent adds, “I always wonder what the ordinary passenger makes of occasions such as this, as hundreds of enthusiasts dart about with cameras clicking. Saturday afternoon in the bus station in Walsall was busy with passengers who would’ve been amused and indeed baffled at the goings on. What they thought of the two Nationals departing with standing loads for Chase’s depot is anyone’s guess.

“And even some of the enthusiasts would’ve been perplexed by the three *female* fans in Walsall, seemingly aged between 25 and 75 (yes, 75), one of whom had a microphone and the other was busy taking videos. And why not?"

The comments made yesterday to the original post (now on the bloglet) are retained below.

Finally, I am reminded that a belated thank you to Arriva Midlands and Chase drivers is in order, for their efforts in ensuring a memorable day.

An excellent post. Did your corresponant take any pictures from the Arriva garage where there were I think four of the seven Arriva fronted nationals?

Not all routes were National operated on the day. There were a couple of Arriva oldies out and about

Superb post. I too was up there; got to ride on three LSs (as was) on a scenic ride to Brownhills (!). Although I missed the duplicate and trip to the depot, I managed to photograph most of the Nationals out that day, and the odd Arriva motor that I don't know whether is now indigenous or not (shows how much I care about Arriva).

Advert on side of Chase National: "Is there more to life than this?"

Answer: Absolutely not. Such a pity the National will be disappearing from our streets.

Real buses.

Odd that Arriva Delta Way will see Nationals once again, they will surely get rid quick because the will be extremely none standard, not that "standard" is a term i'd use at Cannock,

Yes, the dust cart National should see Arriva service, as its one of the advert buses, its seen an Arriva front.

More than anything, I will miss the cheerful Chase livery. That white top is so National Bus. And the way the orange and brown is applied is also very traditional. Travel WM’s plainer all white just doesn’t do it.

Ahem. Walsall is not NEAR Birmingham as you say, Walsall is Walsall! We have our own WS postcode you know!

You wouldn't say Poole was near Bournemouth would you!

You forgot to thank Arriva Midlands for organising the day. They may have taked a few squid in additional fares but they need not have organised the event. All credit to Arriva and Chase for a grand day. Keep the Nationals running as heritage verhicles.
