Better Late than Never?

Results of Wilts & Dorset’s 17 October 2006 public inquiry are expected in less than a fortnight but the press is being kept in the dark as to the evidence heard, pending the traffic commissioner’s decision.

W&D has not denied that some of its services had been operating unpunctually [is that a word?], including running early . But in mitigation, W&D did state that roadworks, Poole bridge lifting and general congestion were to blame for some problems. It stated that its June 2006 network reappraisal (with a six per cent drop in mileage) has improved punctuality.

Said W&D in the Echo, "Sadly it's impossible to run a 100 per cent reliable service because of factors out of our control which can have a massive impact on our network, like minor accidents and roadworks." How true that statement is. And Poole bridge is due to close for eight days starting today – potentially causing traffic chaos.

Meanwhile, the 29 October re-routing of the Wimborne Flyer via only a part of Merley but not all of it is causing concern for some residents who believe have been left out. While W&D stated that to operate via the Sopwitch Crescent area would be uneconomic, one resident commented in the press, “When the bus is once an hour and usually very late the public obviously despair.” Very late? Cue VOSA and the traffic commissioner.

There but for the grace of god go any of us - realistically running a service within the punctuality remit demanded by the traffic commissioners just isn't possible - and unlike the railways there is NO control of the road whatsoever - conjecture - ask any car notorist to predict his arrival time in a town 20 miles away...if he/she can get within -1 minute early or +5 minutes late reliably every day...see what they say; Now ask the same question, but specify the picking up of people en route - QED - the hearings are bollox, the presumption is bollox ... it is simply another tax on bus operators, and becoming regarded as such

Never mind Cogidubnus. It won't be too long before the technology exists for fully automated traffic systems. In goes your route into the computer and rather like the parting of the waves, the automated highway will get you to your destination in time by adjusting all the motorists times. Yeah, right.
